How to Deal With Depression

Depression can be a very daunting. It will rob you of your energy, your drive, and even your hope. Even though it is quite a difficult thing to get over, it is not impossible. It will not take a snap of the finger, but with tiny steps, little by little you can beat it.

Getting over depression requires action. It may be small actions, but doing something is far more rewarding and progressive than doing nothing. The first thing to do is to will yourself to get out of bed each day, as even that becomes difficult. Each day find something small to do. Going to lunch with a friend, calling a loved one, taking a walk around the block, or even outside in the yard. These simple things will aid you in dealing with, and eventually overcoming depression.

When dealing with depression you have to stay focused. Don’t try to think of a million things to do at a time, just think about one. What am I going to do today to help in my progress of overcoming depression? Today I am going to take the dog for a walk, for example. Then you stay focused on that task and do it.

Don’t stay away from people

The easiest thing to do when you are depressed is to avoid people. This is not at all healthy. You have to surround yourself with positive people at this time. Call a friend and tell her how you feel. Ask her to check up on you. Talk to your pastor, or a clergy, or someone responsible that you can be accountable to. Join a support group. Also you can find a supportive member of your family. Whatever you do, keep people around you.

Exercise

Exercise is an antidepressant. This is going to be very difficult, but difficult things aren’t impossible. Remember to stay focused on what you would like to achieve. I need to get better, that is the goal. Then take it one day at a time, one step at a time. Tell yourself for example, today I am going to walk around the yard, then focus on doing that. The next day you may climb the stairs in your home a couple times, the next day you may walk around the block, and so on. However small the exercise you must do it.

Music

A very good way to deal with depression is through music. Good, uplifting, upbeat music. Put some on and dance around when no one is watching, or go dancing with a friend, you would be surprised how much this lifts you.

Talk to God

Even praying becomes difficult when you are depressed. What we don’t realise is that God knows and He understands. God understand that it is difficult to talk to Him at this time, but He also wants you to because he can help. One line sentences to God are very effective I find. “God I am just so tired, help me.” This one line proved very effective for me when I was going through depression, or simply just, “God help me.” He will immediately send his angels to your aid. Isn’t that what His Word says, He will command His angels to bear you up before you stumble, or fall (Psalm 91:11-12). God will never allow you to go under. Cry to him in those lonely times when all you feel like doing is crying.

Be Consistent

Please, please, whatever you do, be consistent. Don’t make an effort towards progress today and fall back tomorrow. Do something everyday that will lift you. Remember, small steps, one day at a time. You can do this.
